Bengaluru: Home minister K.J. George said he could not comment on Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa's statement opposing the alliance between Congress and JD(S) for the BBMP polls.

“He is the Speaker and he is above every party. We cannot question his statements,'” Mr George said. When asked whether it was an embarrassment for the party, he said the party unit would discuss the issue and as a minister, he could not make a comment.

Defending Congress-JD(S) alliance, Mr George said it was nothing new and such alliances existed throughout the country. Congress has forged alliance with almost all political parties, barring BJP. “Even with JD(S), we had an alliance earlier,” he said.

Meanwhile, JD(S) MLA Y.S.V. Datta said that the party had not bargained for any standing committee positions in BBMP. Speaking to reporters in Vidhana Soudha, Mr Datta said JD(S) had put forth only two conditions- there should be a detailed probe into the Rs 9,600 crore loan and misuse of funds in BBMP during the last five years. Secondly, the move to trifurcate BBMP should be dropped. “I don't think trifurcation will affect the proposed alliance,” he said.
