It was fashion legend Karl Lagerfield who said, ‘Luxury is the ease of a t-shirt in a very expensive dress,’ but it’s city designers Deepa and Vineet Chikarmane who are following his words to the ‘t’! The husband and wife duo have launched their online luxury fashion line and are ready with their debut fall collection. Bringing Indian embroidery to contemporary high fashion, the parents of a 14-year- old daughter and a seven-year-old son, are on a mission to unleash a subtle brand of subdued opulence in the evening wear of today’s city woman.

While his wife is often seen in clothes that the duo have designed Vineet is one who strongly believes in making indigenous luxury wear available to women easily. “I was doing my masters in computer science in Canada when Deepa started thinking of a fashion line. We realised that when it came to quality of evening wear, India strangely had to look to the West. So we built a line that takes off from global trends and ensures a smoothness – something that we are incredibly good at achieving, we feel. are devoted to ensuring that the modern woman who juggles a million responsibilities is endowed with a touch of the extraordinary,” says Vineet.

Silk trench dresses with Gara embroidered detailing, ivory skirts with crystal beading, Chikankari jackets in washed blacks tell their refined yet irreverent stories with casual magnificence.

“Our main concern while designing the clothing was that, even though it is luxury, it should feel good against our skin. You know how women are almost always made to be conscious of whether their tummy is sticking out when they wear expensive clothing? I wanted to get rid of that once and for all – so enter the silk tank tops and the encrusted crepe suits that are a departure from the usual boxy suits made for women. A long shirt dress in tan or emerald can be tied up at the waist with a belt and transformed into evening wear from day wear,” says Deepa.

Spending most of their day in their studios, the couple are also into fitness as well as having a good time with their kids. “We wake up incredibly early. I have a bit of a lie in while Vineet is out exercising in the wee hours. Then I get the kids ready, he drops them to school and we both head to the day’s responsibilities at the warehouses. I am most usually stopped at the tracks often asked what I am wearing. It’s a great experience to be able to make and wear your own clothes,” says Deepa
