Illegal buildings sprout during long holidays
At least 10 stop memos issued during breaks
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Illegal constructions are in full swing during Onam and long holidays, keeping the town planning authorities under the city corporation on their toes.
Complaints mount against unauthorised construction of residential structures and other buildings during holidays. According to officials, a minimum of 10 stop memos are issued on holidays.
With the advent of Onam holidays, civic authorities have deployed special squads to keep track of such constructions.
On Thursday, the special squad received a slew of calls concerning illegal construction at Nalanchira and other parts of the city. A stop memo was issued to a party at Nalanchira for engaging in illegal construction.
A top official of the town planning wing said that the civic body had special squads to attend to such complaints during Onam. Kazhakoottam, Nemom, Nalanchira and outer areas of the city are the hot spots where illegal constructions are happening.
“We receive a lot of complaints during holidays. Violators go ahead with the construction during holidays to avoid official intervention. We noticed this long ago and decided to constitute special squads to attend to such issues. Most such constructions are happening outside the city limits,” said the official.
The official said that the cases were of mostly small constructions. “Huge violations by builders do not happen during holidays and a majority of the cases are individual and scattered.
It is difficult when we get multiple calls at the same time. If we receive a call from Nemom and Kazhakoottam it would be difficult for us to reach the spots,” said the official.
