Fort Kochi police arrest syrang of Besalel

The offence under the section can attract a jail term extending to six months and a fine of Rs 1,000

Besalel, the boat which rammed into the passenger ferry in Fort Kochi on Wednesday cannot be termed as a proper fishing boat. It is a traditional boat fitted with outboard engine known in local parlance as ‘Kappal Vallams', said V.D. Majeendran,

Kochi: The Fort Kochi police on Thursday  arrested the syrang (driver)  of Besalel, the  motorized fishing vessel,  which rammed a ferry boat killing 10 persons on Wednesday.

The syrang,  K.S. Johny of Kannamaly, was held by Mr G. Venu, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Mattancherry),  under  section 280 of the IPC  for rash navigation of vessel.

The offence  under the section can attract a jail term extending to six months and  a  fine of Rs 1,000. The cops also slapped section 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder).

The police had earlier arrested  Shiju,  who was navigating the vessel when the accident  occurred,  suspecting him to be the srank. When questioned  Shiju said that he did not have a valid licence and that he was only a mechanic.
