Rs 2.89 crore hawala money, 13 kg gold seized at Perinthalmanna

The cash and gold were kept inside a secret cover of the Maruti Suzuki SX4 car in which they were travelling

MALAPPURAM: In a major hawala seizure, a five-member gang was arrested with Rs 2.89 crore in cash and 13 kg of gold valued at  Rs 6.25 crore  at Perinthalmanna  early on Tuesday.

The gang, which brought the items from Bangalore,  was  headed for  Malappuram and  Koduvally areas, said Perinthalmanna circle inspector K.M Biju.

The accused,   Vinod Kumar, Manoj, Mohammed Salim, Mohammed Ali and Rasheed, all natives of Malappuram,  were held  at Karinkallathani, Perinthalmanna,  based on a tip off.

The cash and gold were kept inside a  secret cover of the Maruti Suzuki SX4  car in which they were  travelling.   District Superintendent of Police, Debesh Kumar Behra, DySP  P.M. Pradeep  and CI Biju led the team.

The arrested were produced before the Perinthalmanna judicial first class magistrate and remanded in custody.
