Kochi: Placing new model vehicles over open tempos and displaying the same at prominent junctions along the beats of drums is a typical sales promotion technique used by vehicle dealers during festive seasons.

With Onam around the corner, the motor vehicle department (MVD) has asked vehicle dealers in Kochi to take prior permission for such acts.

They are also restrained from illegal use of new vehicles like conducting free trial runs.

“The method of sales promotion is common during Onam. However, it came to our notice that the dealers use new vehicles for display without obtaining mandatory trade certificates,” a senior MVD official said.

“Another misuse by dealers is unauthorised trial runs of new vehicles before the sale. The speedometer cables are disconnected during such free test rides and later the same ones are sold as brand new machines. We’ve started surprise checks against such acts.”

Regional transport officer (RTO) K. M. Shaji said a number of dealers had already approached the MVD to conduct open display of new vehicles.
