Imphal: At least 21 people have been killed due to a landslide in Manipur's Khenjoy area, near the Myanmar border. Police say they're searching for 21 people feared buried in a mudslide triggered by torrential monsoon rains in the mountainous northeast region.

A police officer says the mudslide occurred Saturday in Goupi, a village in Manipur state close to India's border with Myanmar. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters.

The death toll might go up as more people were feared trapped under the debris. Police reinforcements have reached the area and were trying to remove the rubble to find the missing people.

The village is 160 kilometres (100 miles) southwest of Imphal, the Manipur state capital.
