City needs bigger waste treatment plant: Jiji Thomson
Chief secretary appalled at the condition of Brahmapuram plant, says it makes everyone suffer
Kochi: Chief secretary Jiji Thomson on Saturday expressed deep displeasure at the way the waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram is run and said the plant will not be able to meet the requirements of the growing city.
“What I saw at Brahmapuram is unbelievable,” he told Deccan Chronicle after visiting the plant and listening to the local residents’ complaints against the plant. “Everyone in the area suffers because of its inefficient running.”
The chief secretary said there are better technologies available all over the world for waste treatment and there is little point in the state not adopting them.
The chief secretary told officials at a reception in the collectorate that the state will have to adopt the practices and technologies countries such as China and Singapore have adopted.
He said he will submit before the Cabinet the issues the local as well as the city residents faced thanks to the inadequacies of the present plant.
Mr Thomson said there should be an awareness campaign for decentralised waste treatment. “Ideally, waste should be treated at the origin itself. Given the circumstances, we shall have to go for big plans in every districts to tackle the issue,” he said.
The chief secretary was accompanied by the corporation officials and public works department secretary APM Muhmamed Haneesh. He also visited animal birth control and vaccination centre the city corporation has set up for the sterilisation and vaccination for stray dogs.
