Visakhapatnam: Civic staff detained for bid to storm collectorate
However, 5,200 outsourcing sanitations workers would continue the strike
Visakhapatnam: Tension prevailed in front of the collectorate when hundreds of striking municipal workers staged a massive protest and tried to lay siege to the collectorate demanding that the government revise their wages even as the heaps of garbage piled up in several parts of the city on Friday.
A minor scuffle ensued when the workers on their way to the collectorate were prevented by the cops and the cops had taken the protestors into preventive custody.
Speaking on the occasion, CituU leader Ch. Narasinga Rao criticised Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for resorting to repressive measures against the striking sanitation workers using the men-in-khaki and has been trying to suppress the agitation. The workers said that Mr Naidu has promised to regularise the services of municipal workers but he ignored it after coming to power. The agitators said that they would continue the struggle till their demands are conceded.
District official spokespe-rson of YSR Congress Peethala Murthy Yadav said due to the indefinite strike of municipal workers garbage continued to be piled up in all the corners of Vizag. Mr Yadav demanded that the government announce health emergency in Vizag to save the lives of people.
There is partial relief in the on-going strike with the recognised VMC staff and workers union calling off the strike on Thursday. However, 5,200 outsourcing sanitations workers would continue the strike.
