VelloreLatheri police has registered a case against a couple under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 and Section 428 of IPC for allegedly poisoning a dog to death.
The case has been registered following the intervention of Union cabinet minister for women & child development and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi.

According to sources, the couple — Sivakumar and his wife Indira — living at Ilatheri village wanted to get even with their neighbour Sathya whose dog had bitten their hen and killed it a few days ago.

The couple allegedly scattered poisoned food stuff near the canine’s rest place at Sathya’s house. The dog ate part of the food and died within an hour, the sources said. Sathya on seeing some poisonous food near the dead animal immediately approached the New World Animal Rescue Charitable Trust’s Blue Cross India, an animal rescuing team functioning in Pallikonda, to press for action against the couple.

The rescuing team headed by its founder-president Sugumaran  and other members instructed the owner of the dog to file a complaint with the Ilatheri village police station.
According to sources, the police had refused to accept Sathya’s complaint as there was no proper evidence that the dog was killed by the neighbor.

Sugumaran, an ex-CR PF man, tried to contact Menaka Gandhi but she was not available then. He then contacted her personal assistant, who asked the police to accept the complaint to take action after inquiries were made, sources said.

Subsequently, the Blue Cross’ animal rescuing team and the police conducted inquiries simultaneously in the village, in which it was confirmed that Sivakumar family had a long-standing enmity with Sathya’s family. The evidence collected from near the dead dog proved that poison was mixed with chicken, which the dog had consumed. Veterinary doctor Thirunavakarasu conducted autopsy on the dog. The report will be submitted to the police on Monday, sources said.
