ChennaiThe leaders of the BJP and Hindu Munnani have condemned the “murderous” attack on BJP national secretary H. Raja’s house in Karaikudi (in Sivagangai district) on Monday night allegedly by fringe elements and attribute it to “growing intolerance” among a section towards the BJP leaders in particular.

Claiming that the “murderous attack was engineered to cause terror and was personally targeted against Raja,” Union minister of state for road transport, highways and shipping Pon Radhakrishnan said the hurling of petrol bombs on Raja’s house at 10.30 pm only showed the growing intolerance against the leader. “This should be viewed seriously and the police should identify the real culprits and also those under whose behest it was executed; and initiate stern action on them,” Mr Radhakrishnan said.

Describing it as “shocking” BJP state president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan said the incident only raised the issue of security for political leaders. “It is government’s duty to ensure protection to the people.. Tough action should be taken on those responsible for the attack,” she said while registering her condemnation.

Asserting that incidents of attacks on Hindu leaders were on the rise, Hindu Munnani founder-convener Ramagopalan said those behind the terror attacks were emboldened as no action was taken on them. “Even in the earlier attack on Raja’s house, the police are yet to trace out and arrest the culprits,” he added.

A host of other leaders including state BJP vice presidents: M. Chakravarthy and Vanathi Srinivasan, too condemned the attack. Earlier, Raja had received murder threats twice in the last two years.

In 2013, a two-member gang had gone to a garden owned by him and threatened the security and reportedly told the security man that they would execute Raja. In 2014, two persons had dropped a letter threatening that Raja would be murdered in the house.
