Tomar has been accused of cheating, criminal conspiracy for faking degrees

New Delhi: In a major blow to the AAP government, Delhi Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar, who was arrested by the Delhi Police on Tuesday morning has been sent to four-day police custody. Earlier, in the day Tomar was taken to a Saket court in the national capital.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh rubbished charges that Tomar’s arrest was a conspiracy and said that the MHA had nothing to do with it.

"The Ministry of Home Affairs does not indulge in such activities. The law takes it own course. There is no interference by the MHA in any such matter," Singh said.

49-year-old Tomar has been accused of cheating, forgery with purpose of cheating and criminal conspiracy under various sections of IPC.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi said that Tomar’s arrest was as per procedure.

The AAP has accused the BJP-led NDA Government of indulging in vendetta politics, and said that the court and not the police should decide whether Tomar's papers are forged.

AAP has alleged that about 30 policemen arrested Tomar in the morning when he was addressing people in his West Delhi constituency.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal convened an emergency meeting soon after the arrest.

Hitting out at the Centre, deputy CM Manish Sisodia said that the situation in Delhi was similar to the one during Emergency.

"There is an emergency-like situation in Delhi," he said.
