VisakhapatnamIn the last Budget, the Union government had allotted Rs 50 crore per district in the two regions, which locals termed as a pittance. Before the 2014 general elections, then Union minister Jairam Ramesh had said the seven districts in the two regions — North Andhra and Rayalaseema — would get Rs 11,000 crore.

Local think tanks had demanded Rs 10,000 crore for the development of agriculture sector by speeding up irrigation projects, Rs 20,000 for industry sector and Rs 10,000 for establishment of various institutes to cater to the needs of service and tourism sector,  only in the three districts of north Andhra.

The contribution of the service sector to the gross state domestic product was Rs 6,653.73 crore in Srikakulam, Rs 6,337.64 crore in Vizianagaram, the lowest in the state, and Rs 23,055.51 crore in Visakhapatnam. The sector contributes Rs 40,348.26 crore in Hyderabad and Rs 22,631.39 crore in Ranga Reddy district.

Interestingly, East Godavari, the neighbouring district of Visakhapatnam, contributed as much as other developed districts in the state like Guntur, Krishna and some districts in Rayalaseema in recent years. But North Andhra has remained the lowest in this area too.
