New DelhiBreaking his silence over his ongoing confrontation with lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung on the Delhi government’s powers to post or transfer bureaucrats, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accused the Narendra Modi-led Central government on Friday of trying to usurp the powers of a duly elected government in the city state through the “backdoor”, and equated the Prime Minister with the “Queen of England”.

Hours after the Union home ministry issued a gazette notification on Thursday asserting it was not mandatory for the lieutenant-governor to consult the CM on matters like appointments of bureaucrats, Mr Kejriwal said the Modi government had “backstabbed” the people of Delhi by issuing a notification “siding” with Mr Jung. Invoking the spectra of Raj-style imperial rule in Delhi, the AAP supremo equated Mr Modi with the Queen of England and Mr Jung to the Viceroy of India.
