THIRUVANANTHAPURAMOn the eve of the fourth anniversary of the UDF government which will be celebrated on  May 18, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is confidence personified though his ministry has been put in the dock by the bargate. Mr Chandy is expected to meet the media on Sunday to explain the achievements of his government and the future strategy with just a year remaining for the Assembly elections.

Mr Chandy has been pushing ahead with his ‘Mission 676’ which he had announced  last year coinciding with the third anniversary of the government.   ‘Mission 676’  referred to the effective days remaining before the government when major infrastructure and social schemes were to be implemented. Apart from the Vizhinjam International Transshipment Terminal, the other dream projects for which the government can take credit are the Smart City, Kochi Metro, Kannur airport and Technocity.

But a section of the KPCC leaders feels  that the bargate has dented the government’s image.  They also say  that the CM does not have any control over his cabinet colleagues which had forced the PCC  president to issue guidelines to the  Congress ministers ahead of the  Aruvikara by-election.

But corruption charges have been bothering the  government for a long time.  Last year during the same time,  it was the solar scam that had put the  government on the mat.   Congress leaders have put the blame on  Finance Minister and KC (M) chairman K. M. Mani for tarnishing the government’s image.

“Chandy  created problems by defending a tainted Mani or else he would have had a smooth sailing. When PCC chief V. M. Sudheeran spearheaded the anti-liquor movement, Chandy led a coup  and decided  to close all the bars. Sudheeran became the apostle of all principles and none thought that the situation would go out of hand,”  said a senior Congress leader.

At the KPCC executive meeting held on May 9, the party had decided to rally behind the government and celebrate the  fourth anniversary on a grand scale. KPCC spokesperson Pandalam Sudhakaran defended the government saying that  a coalition government has to address various issues wisely.
