Public library opens annex at GCDA
A novel initiative to spread reading culture
Kochi: At a time when there are concerns that reading is on the wane, the Ernakulam Public Library in a novel initiative is reaching out to more areas and readers by opening annexes.
The second in the series was opened at the GCDA office building at Kadavanthra on Wednesday. Now books will be ferried out from the public library to the annex office to enable the GCDA office staff and the public to access the nearly two lakh books of the library.
The library annex was thrown open by Local Self-Government secretary A P M Mohammed Haneesh at a function attended by M K Sanu.
A reception was accorded to Konkani litterateur N Purushothama Mallya who received the Padmasree recently. GCDA chairman N Venugopal presided over the function.
The first annex of the public library was opened at the Kerala High Court sometime ago and GCDA chairman N Venugopal took active interest in opening the second annexe and the GCDA Recreation Club stepped in to support it.
“There are nearly 65 employees at GCDA Kadavanthra office and they can make use of the facility and even the members of the public including staff of nearby offices can access it by enrolling as members at the annex while existing members of the library too can use it. Books will be brought from the Public Library to the annex twice a month and readers can send their requirements to the email of the Public Library and those books will be brought to the annex during these two occasions,” said N Venugopal.
Books are distributed from the annex at High Court once a week and the same will be applicable to the GCDA library annex also.
