THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The centre has decided to put on hold till May 31 the fresh norms on overseas recruitment of nurses  considering the difficulties being faced by many holding valid nurse visas obtained before the restrictions came into effect on May 1.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had even written to the centre to relax the new norms.  DC had also reported the hardship faced by a woman who had obtained a nurse visa to Sharjah.

According to government sources,  anyone possessing a valid visa for nurse job abroad can now  get emigration clearance easily. From June 1,  only those holding visas obtained through three government- designated recruiting agencies will be given emigration clearance.

Apart from this, the fresh norms had also  mandated clearance from the Protectors of Emigrants. Hence, many nurses who had obtained valid visas through private agencies  prior to May 1 were stopped  at the airport emigration counters. The Protectors of Emigrants were also not able to give clearances due to the norms.
