Little chefs from the city made their way to The Westin Hyderabad Mindspace to show off their culinary skill in a cook-off on Saturday. Four teams, which had around 17 children between the age group of nine and 13, battled for the Super Chef title. The challenge was to make a salad, main course and a dessert, all in three hours. “As part of the challenge, the children will be learning and making healthy recipes. Also, the vegetables have been pre cut and the children will be cooking on induction cookers, to avoid any mishap. Each team also has a chef who will mentor them throughout the process,” informed executive Chef Steffan, who was also one of the judges.

While a few of the kids had cooked before, it was a first time for many. And throughout the process, the kids learnt an important quality — teamwork. In the end, it was the Green team — Nina, Jasmine, Tanya, Rohan and Manaswini — mentored by Chef Pradeep, who stood first and took away the medals. They made Insalata Mista (salad), Chicken Piccata (main course) and Blueberry panna cotta (dessert).

“This isn’t the first time I have cooked. I have earlier participated in a few such events. I am mostly good with desserts,” says Jasmine, a Class V student of International School of Hyderabad, and one of the winners. Her teammate, Nina, a Class V student of Mosaica International School of Hyderabad added, “I am good with desserts too. I am basically good with baking.”

Celebrity chef Sanjay Thumma, one of the judges, discloses why he chose Team Green as the winner. “Team Green knew what they were preparing. Children perform better if they have an idea of what they need to cook.” With a lot of events on the lines of Masterchef, looks like being a chef is the next big thing. Sanjay Thumma added, “Kids should get into the kitchen and help parents. Summer is a good time to learn since they will have plenty of time. Also, it will help a lot of kids out there who want to be a chef.”
