Applications for M.E. programmes in Tamil Nadu common admission test (Tancet) has come down drastically from about 17,200 last year to 13,555
Chennai: The number of applications for M.E. programmes in Tamil Nadu common admission test (Tancet) has come down drastically from about 17,200 last year to 13,555 this year. A total of 30,449 students have bought application forms for MBA, MCA and M.E. from Anna University till April 17, of which 13,555 (42.48 per cent of the total) are for M.E., MBA - 13,004 (40.75 per cent) and MCA - 5,351 (16.77 per cent).

The drop in applications for M.E. has also reflected in the overall numbers as the total application this year has witnessed a dip of about 5,000. Commenting about the trend, Anna University former vice-chancellor Prof A. Kalanidhi pointed out that most of the IT companies recruit only undergraduate (B.E/B.Tech) students rather than postgraduates (M.E./M.Tech) as undergraduates demand less salary.

“In the past, M.E. postgraduates joined private engineering colleges as faculty for a decent salary but now these institutions also pay them less. So, keeping all this in mind, students may not have applied for M.E. in Tancet this year,” he added.Students, too, felt that with abundant job opportunities for B.E. graduates, they would rather refrain from pursuing M.E.

“For the past three years, several IT companies recruited fewer students because of global economic recession and economic slowdown so they preferred to pursue higher studies; but now, with the positive trend in the job market, we would like to join a company than study higher education,” said S. Satish, a B.E. graduate.
