Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Medical Council has debarred eight doctors from practising medicine from one to three years.  Dr C. Swami Naidu has been debarred for three years for issuing fake death certificates for three persons. The ethics committee of the APMC found that the persons were alive and had faked their deaths to claim life insurance.

The APMC in its order to the doctor, stated: “It is unbecoming of a registered medical practitioner to issues such certificates.” Dr Naidu was not available for comment.
Two senior doctors have been pulled up for not providing proper post-operative care to a patient and leaving him in the hands of a doctor qualified from Russia.

Senior spine surgeon Dr Goli Peda Venkata Subbaiah and Dr D. Anjaneya Prasad of Prasad Hospital in Kukatpally have been asked to surrender their permanent certificates for a year. Dr Subbaiah operated on a patient but was not available for post-operative care.

Dr Goli Peda Venkata  Subbaiah, a senior spine surgeon and a director at Sunshine Hospital, who has been debarred, is planning to appeal to the state government. Dr Gurva Reddy, managing director of Sunshine Hospital said, “The patient recovered well but was extremely upset that the post-operative care was not properly taken. We are aware of this order and Dr Subbaiah is going to appeal to the state government to reconsider it.”

Three doctors from Salama Hospital in Hyderabad, Dr Athya Parveen, Dr Zehra Tayeba and Dr Fareesa Qasim, have also been removed for a year as they did not follow standard operating procedures before surgery and other investigations. The council found that Dr Athya Praveen was only an MBBS and was not a qualified gynaecologist as she had been claiming.

Dr Fareesa Qasim has been pulled up for negligence in inducing spinal anesthesia to a patient without preventive equipment like ECG monitor etc. Due to high dosage of anesthesia the patient underwent respiratory failure and cardiac arrest.

Dr Ravinder Reddy, chairman of APMC, said, “Wherever the grievance is very serious, like death, as it was in this case, we are taking the permanent certificate for three years or more. It is to ensure that standard practices are followed properly. There have been lots of discussions and they have been given a chance to explain.”

Dr Rajyalakshmi Devi P.T. from Vijayawada was also pulled up for wrongly administering anesthesia, which resulted in the death of a patient. Dr Mir Liaquat Ali has been debarred for six months as he could not revive a patient properly, indicating that the anesthesia dosage was not correct. The APMSC states that the doctors can appeal to the Health minister and if they get no relief, they can also approach the courts.
