When you walk into businessman Suresh Kothari’s duplex apartment in Fortune Icon, Banjara Hills, the first thing you notice are the bright colours. And Suresh resides in this plush apartment with wife Rajeshree, son Ashish, daughter-in-law Shilpa and grandchildren Aarav and Saanvi.

From a bright green sofa at the entrance, there is a smooth transition to the silver sofa near the dining table. The dark sofas in the living room were specially selected.

“As they have kids in their home, I wanted the environment to be such that more than anyone else, the kids feel at home. So the colours were used in a way that even if they drop food or paint on the floor, it won’t be too visible,” says their interior designer Supraja Rao.

And that’s exactly what the family wanted. “We wanted the house to be child-friendly. So, you won’t notice sharp edges on the furniture. We also decided to have a spacious play area in the first floor,” says Shilpa.

Another theme kept in mind while designing their home was to have hints of ethnicity. “We cannot make interiors depicting who we are not. That’s why even though their home has a modern look, it also has traditional touches, like the artefact on the staircase, a gift that was given to their ancestors by the Nizam,” says Supraja.

The home theatre on the first floor too is special. While posters of their favourite films, which include Supraja’s, are hung on the walls, the ceiling has a colourful family tree.
