Porattam denies links to attacks

KOCHI: The leaders of Porattam, considered as a left extremist organisation by security agencies, have denied reports that it had links with the simultaneous attacks by suspected Maoists in Palakkad and Wayanad districts the other day.
“We are an organisation working openly for the past many years and we don’t have any records of indulging in any violent activities,” said Porattom chairman M.N. Ravunni and general convener P.J. Manual.
Regarding the two youths taken into custody in connection with the attack on the KFC-McDonald outlets in Palakkad, Mr Ravunni said that he came to know about them from media reports. Mr Manual also denied that the arrested persons had any links with Porattam.
The two youths, identified as Arun Balan and Srikanth Prabhakaran, were remanded by the Palakkad judicial first class magistrate court till January 6. The police had registered charges under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against the two.
They were taken into custody from Mankara in Palakkad district on Monday. Arun, 23, belongs to Cheruvathur and Srikanth, 21, to Thrikkarippur in Kasargod district. The probe team also conducted searches in their houses and seized Maoist literature and pamphlets.
