New Delhi: Condemning the killing of 33 people by the banned outfit National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts of Assam, Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday said 50 extra companies of central forces will be mobilized in the state to tackle the situation.

"It is a blatant attack in a situation where it was not expected. The location of the attacks is very remote. Security forces are already doing their work, and the state has asked for 50 extra companies of Central forces, which we will mobilize," said Rijiju.

"Home Minister Rajnath Singh is leaving for Assam this afternoon along with me to take stock of the situation. It's very unfortunate that such violence took place, when we have already sent a message that violence and development cannot go together, and peace must prevail," he said.

"This tragic incident is a blot on our efforts and process of development in North Eastern region. I'm upset due to the fact that despite our appeal, this incident took place and innocent people have lost their lives, it's totally unacceptable," he added.

Earlier today, President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also condemned the attack.

Rajnath Singh will also be visiting the state later on Wednesday, in order to take stock of the situation.

According to reports, the state Home department has instructed the administration of all the districts to remain alert.

The world heritage site, Manas National Park has also been closed for three days in a bid to intensify operation against militants.
