Coffee shop charged Rs 55 lakh for playing Salman Khan song

Mumbai: Coffee shops that have mushroomed across the country not only serve hot coffees but also entertain us with our favourite songs playing in the background. On one such occasion, when a popular coffee shop was merely trying to delight its customers with a track from 'Ek tha Tiger', it received a notice from Novex Communications for allegedly using a song from the Yash Raj Films production without prior permission and licensing rights, according to reports.
Novex Communications which is a Mumbai-based broadcasting and public performance licensing company has asked the coffee shop chain to cough up a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh and Rs. 50 lakh for liquidated damage for infringement of copyrights, said the report. The outlets of the coffee shop is located in Vidya Vihar, Mumbai and is said to have played a song from the movie ‘Ek That Tiger’ for commercial exploitation and without prior consent.
