Thiruvananthapuram: The national mega adalat of the district legal services authority held here on Friday  awarded Rs 5.9 crore as compensation to actor Jagathy Sreekumar who was seriously injured in a road accident near Kozhikode on March 10, 2012.

The insurance company, Future Generali Accident Suraksha, has been asked to pay the  compensation.

Though the actor's wife had filed a petition seeking Rs 13 crore, the amount was reduced to Rs 5.9 crore through a compromise decree, the lawyer of Mr Sreekumar's family A. Abdul Karim, told DC.

As per the order,  the amount would have to be deposited at the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal court here.

Mr Karim said that the plan was to organise a function attended by the top authorities of the insurance company  at the actor's residence on Saturday to hand over the cheque.

The accident occurred when the comedian was travelling to a shooting location on the Kerala-Karnataka border. The plea was filed  including the insurance company and the driver as defendants.

For almost a year, Jagathy was under treatment at the Christian Medical College Hospital at Vellore in Tamil Nadu. He  returned home in Kerala last month.

The case filed by Sobha Sreekumar through  Mr Abdul Karim was based on the IT returns of the actor, the contract he had entered at the time of the accident, his age and the roles expected in future.

As per the IT returns filed in July last year for that financial year, Jagathy had a gross income of Rs 1.32 crore and a net income of Rs 48 lakh. Besides that, he had many ongoing projects in hand.
