Aamir's episode that was aired on May 12, 2012 should be dubbed into Kannada
Bengaluru: A government appointed committee's suggestion to get dubbed into Kannada an episode of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan's popular tele-series, Satyamev Jayate, that specially dealt with child rape incidents, had to be shelved after two MLCs, who are members of the panel and who have links with the film industry, protested, pointing to a total ban on dubbing of television serials and movies in the state.
The 26-member expert committee, headed by former law minister M.C. Nanaiah, has been set up by the government to suggest measures for safety of women and children.
The committee had suggested that Aamir's episode that was aired on May 12, 2012 should be dubbed into Kannada and distributed in CD format to schoolchildren and the police, but the two MLCs shot it down.
Sources said that the committee's suggestion was stonewalled at a meeting it had called of stakeholders, including people's representatives, activists and officials in the last week of October at Vikasa Soudha to discuss measures for improving the safety of women in the city.
When Mr Nanaiah suggested the idea, the MLCs protested and remained adamant despite all his attempts to persuade them, they said. Finally, the committee decided to drop the idea.
An activist, who was at the meeting, said, "Aamir is popular with children and dubbing of this episode would have helped us create awareness among them on sexual abuse. But we were really let down by those who were against the dubbing."
When contacted, Mr Nanaiah confirmed that he was keen on dubbing of the Satyamev episode. "But the proposal has been dropped. Now Karnataka Film Chamber president Gangaraj has informed me that the chamber will soon release a CD on sexual abuse with the help of Kannada film stars," he said.
