KOZHIKODE: BJP state general secretary K.Surendran has kicked up a fresh controversy, making derogatory comments against sexual minorities. Surendran at a press conference here, termed the Kiss of Love protest as ‘a mere transgender protest’.

He likened the protest to West-influenced vulgarity, being lapped up India’s young generation. He said it was the fallout of globalisation. “It was only a ‘chandupottu’ (transgender) protest,” said Surendran, making fun of the transgender community.

Addressing reporters on his party’s moral policing stand here, Surendran said, “The protesters showed the culture of transgenders at the Marine Ground. These are titillating methods of protest that will only help in forging a transgender society. The DYFI’s support of the protest was cheap,” he said.

He also blamed the media attention on the protest and said its only aim was to create chaos and confusion in society.

Meanwhile, a group of activists taken into custody in connection with the Kiss of Love protest in Kochi has sought a probe into the alleged police attack on its members after their release from custody on Sunday night. “The police attacked us after our release without any provocation”, they told reporters in Kochi on Monday.

The Government should order a probe into the incident and action should be taken against the guilty, said Adv Thushar Nirmal Saradhy, Adv P.J. Manuel, Adv Nandini and others.

“We will also submit a petition to the State Human Rights Commission”, they said. “The assault took place while we were talking to a group of mediapersons assembled before the Thevara police station after our release”, said Thushar who was injured in the attack. The attack took place in the presence of senior officials like DCP R. Nishanthini, he said.
