Chennai: A day after a portion of busy Dr Nair Road in T. Nagar caved in, motorists are still wary of driving over the covered portion.“The pit was immediately filled with six lorry-loads of sand and there is absolutely no problem. But, the people who directly saw the 18 feet depth of the pit, will not ride over the covered portion, fearing it might cave in anytime. I used the road more than six times today.

But, I made sure I didn’t drive my autorickshaw over that spot,” says Damodaran, an auto driver and member of the nearby Goodwill Autodrivers Welfare Association.Reiterating the corporation’s stand, an official of the local Kodambakkam zone says, “The sewage line laid beneath the ground has leaked and when the waste water was sucked by the pumping station located on Gopalakrishnan Road, the soil was also sucked. The soil, at the joints of two sewage lines, is also sucked at some places.”

“The reason for the caving in is not known. It is ensured that there is no problem in the pipeline in the full stretch. Regular monitoring and checking is being carried out properly. And, whatever is demanded from other departments of metro water department, is also being done,” says a metro water official.
