Bengaluru: From November 1, Bangalore will become Bengaluru. A gazette notification to this effect was issued on Friday.

Some eight years after the Karnataka government submitted a proposal to change the names of 12 cities and towns, the Union government, ten days ago, had given clearance to change the names.

The other cities and towns to be rechristened will be: Mangalore (Mangaluru), Bellary (Ballari), Bijapur (Vijapura), Chikmagalur (Chikkamagaluru), Gulbarga (Kalburgi), Mysore (Mysuru), Hospet (Hosapete), Shimoga (Shivamogga), Hubli (Hubballi) and Tumkur (Tumakuru).

The idea to change Bangalore to Bengaluru was first mooted by  noted litterateur U.R. Ananthamurthy.
