Medicare short staffed in City hospital

The 430-bed hospital has only 23 docs while 33 are required

Karimnagar: Patients visiting the civil hospital in Karimnagar, the major medicare facility in the district, are facing a lot of hardship due to inadequate number of doctors. Patients are being forced to wait for many hours to consult a doctor. The existing staff in the hospital are feeling burdened due to the workload.
 
The 430-bedded hospital should have at least 33 doctors, including surgeons. At present, there only 23 doctors, including heads of various departments, all of whom are working for extended hours everyday to examine all patients visiting the hospital.
 
Around 500 in-patients, who were admitted to the hospital for various ailments, are unable to get proper medical care due to the staff crunch. They are not being visited by the doctors regularly following which they are not able to seek their advice. In some cases, in-patients are even waiting for 2-3 days to speak to a doctor in their wards.
 
Around 100 patients visit the hospital everyday. The staff crunch is putting out-patients also to inconvenience. In the wake of the growing incidence of fevers in the district, the number of patients visiting the hospital has increased. A majority of them are not able to get treatment on time.
 
"Inadequate staff is leading to tremendous pressure on us. We are not machines to work incessantly for many hours," said a doctor. Superintendent of the hospital Dr. K. Laxman too agreed that shortage of doctors has been affecting medicare at the hospital.
