New Delhi: In a bid to end the “inspector raj” system in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday unveiled a number of steps for labour reform. He stressed that it was essential to make doing business in India easier to ensure that the “Make-in-India” campaign was successful.

Rolling out the “Shramev Jayate (Work alone triumphs)” programme, the PM unveiled several steps to introduce portability through an universal account number for the employees’ provident fund and a single-window portal to enable doing business with the labour ministry and labour inspection scheme in the Central sphere.

Mr Modi said these steps were in line with his stress on “minimum government, maximum governance”.

Speaking on the occasion, the PM said that a transparent labour inspection scheme was being developed to check arbitrariness, that ends up in harassment by officials. The new scheme seeks to end the practice of selecting units for inspection locally.
