Trees uprooted due to cyclonic storm at Seethamadhara in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.
Visakhapatnam: While Vizag’s greenery is one of its most prized possessions, however it turned a curse for the city on Sunday as the cyclone Hudhud thrashed Vizag with all its might.Main roads and streets across the entire city were left choking with uprooted huge trees making commutation through almost impossible. A major task lays ahead for the civic authorities of unclogging the city roads of the trees. Hudhud did not just take a toll on the green cover of the city with uprooting of trees but also by stripping many trees off their leaves. Many trees, especially on hilltops could be seen bare brown as the winds of Hudhud were thick with bits of leaves and other tree matter.

With the cyclone choosing Vizag for its landfall, thousands of trees across Vizag got uprooted in a single day wrecking an environmental havoc. There were no emergency
response teams from the government to clear the roads off the uprooted trees due to the heavy wind velocity.

When the winds calmed down a little, a few responsible citizens came together to clear the roads and make way for vehicles to pass by. The fallen green trees also provided an excellent chance for many opportunists as some people cashed in on the opportunity and sawed off fallen trees and took them away for personal use.

An official from the GVMC said, “We will take a clear stock of the issue across the city and start unclogging the roads off the fallen trees as soon as the cyclone weans away.”
