45 sovereigns stolen in 4 burglary incidents in city

Around 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs 50,000 cash were stolen

Chennai: At least 45 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs 50,000 cash were reportedly stolen in four different incidents of theft in the city since Thursday.

Sivakumar, 40, a resident of Sekar Nagar in Jafferkhanpet, has a provision store on Perumal Koil street in Saidapet. According to the police, on Thursday evening, Sivakumar came home to shift a few sacks of rice from his home to the shop when he noticed the front door broken open.

Around 15 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs 50,000 cash were stolen from his home, following which Sivakumar filed a complaint with the Kumaran Nagar police. When contacted, an official said, “We have identified two persons from CCTV footage. Efforts are on to trace them.”

In another incident in Venkateshwara Nagar, Virugambakkam, 11 sovereigns of gold jewellery was reported stolen from the house of Revathi (46). The woman had gone to a restaurant in the neighbourhood around 10 pm along with her children, and when she returned around midnight, the front door was found broken open and the jewels missing.

Based on her complaint on Friday, the Virugambakkam police are investigating. In the southern suburb of Tambaram, 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery were stolen from a house at Sri Ram Nagar.

The occupants, Athikesavan and his wife Pooja, had returned to Chennai on Friday morning to find the house burgled. The Tambaram police are investigating.

Malliga, (51), a resident of Bazaar street in Mylapore, was robbed of her 11 sovereign gold chain by an unidentified duo on a bike in V.M. Chetty street. She was on way to buy milk when the incident took place. The Mylapore police are investigating.
