THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has said that the support extended by Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, head of  the Syro-Malankara Church, to Mr Narendra Modi had saddened him and all secular forces.

In an article in the party mouthpiece Deshabhimani, Mr Pinarayi said the cardinal who is president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, after meeting the Prime Minister had stated that there was no reason to disbelieve the promises made by Mr Modi and extended his support for good governance.

The CPM leader said the cardinal's backing for Mr Modi had disappointed him as it came at a time when secular and democratic forces were putting up a strong fight against his “communal and sectarian” agenda of development and governance.  “It may sound music to Modi's ears but the statement has created apprehension among secular forces,’’ he added.

Many would believe that the cardinal had failed to view seriously the challenges posed by communal forces. It was  regrettable that Cleemis viewed RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s statement that “India is a Hindurashtra and its identity is Hindutva” as just  “personal remarks,” Mr Pinarayi said.

Mr  Modi should be judged by the recent  developments. As a creation of Sangh Parivar,  he is implementing their agenda.  Human Resource Minister Smriti Irani is distorting the education system and RSS leader Sudarshan Rao is the chairman of  Indian Council for Historical Research (ICHR).  Muzaffarnagar riot- accused Sanjeev Baliyan is a union minister and Mr  Amit Shah, whose role in the Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh riots is no secret,  is the BJP president.  Uniform civil code, love jihad conversion and cow slaughter are back on the agenda, he said.
