Chennai: The railway police on Monday seized 23 kg of gold, worth around Rs 5.75 crore, from two passengers who arrived at the Chennai Central railway station from Ahmedabad by Navajeevan express.

According to Central station inspector Purushothaman, the finished gold, all packed in small polythene packs, was found with passengers Chitrap Gandhi and Pradesh. As the gold was found being transported without any supporting documents, the police team decided to seize it.

Though the two passengers claimed that they were representing a well-known showroom in the city and they were bringing the gold for a particular shop, the police have decided to hand over the seized gold to the sales tax department for further action.
