Onam is reviving native games - Goti kali is in progress at Avanoor village in Thrissur district as part of the Onam celebrations.
Thrissur: Some of the dying games like Goli Kali or Goti (marbles) will see a revival during this Onam in many villages in Palakkad and Thrissur districts. It all began with some social media posts and now many village-oriented Onam celebration organisations have  scheduled Goli Kali along with Pookalam competitions for the  festival season.  According to Mr Nineesh Narayanan of Kongad in Palakkad, Goti is one of the most exciting sports events. Earlier, children used to play this game, but few people know it  now.

“Some discussions and posts on social media forced us to include it in our club’s Onam celebration  and the response is overwhelming. As many as 376 people have already registered for the competition. We have also  got sponsors for the event, which is scheduled to be held from  August  28 to September 5,” he said.

“The aim  is to keep alive the game which was commonly played in the region till 35-40 years ago,”  said Mr K.A. Peethambaran master, patron of the tournament.
