Mumbai: Virat Kohli, who had the worst series of his career during the England tour, would have got into some more trouble if the Team India manager, Sunil Dev, had his way. Dev was apparently not at all pleased with the fact that Kohli’s girlfriend, Anushka Sharma, was with him on the tour.
Dev, who was the manager of the Indian team for the Test matches, told DC after returning to Delhi from England, “I would have objected to her presence but was helpless when I realised that permission had been granted by the BCCI secretary, Sanjay Patel.”
“Foreign players do take their girlfriends on tours but our culture is different. Indian society doesn’t allow girlfriends on tours,” he said. “I doubt whether the BCCI secretary had even spoken to the interim president Shivlal Yadav before granting such permission. I am sure Shivlal Yadav would not have agreed,” he says.
“Anushka stayed with Kohli till the 3rd Test (which India lost by 266 runs)”, he added. The Board usually does not take women in the rooms of players lightly. During the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka in 2010, a Team India player was under investigation when it had come to light that a woman had been with him for a couple of days. The matter was dropped later when it came to light that she had been his agent.
Lucky for Kohli, he had taken permission from the Board, otherwise Anushka’s presence might have become quite a scandal.
