Hyderabad: Kareena Kapoor’s look in her upcoming film is drawing a lot of attention — ethnic, long, colourful, flowy skirts teamed with shirts while bonding with her on-screen love interest Ajay Devgn.

The actress, who plays a middle-class Maharashtrian girl, looks lovely, but this is not an easy trend to pull off as shirts teamed with voluminous skirts can make one look shapeless, fat and frumpy.

Designer Anupama Dayal, the lady who gave Kareena this flowy look, explains, “There is method to this madness and it is not about putting shapeless clothes together.”

Explaining the thought process, she says, “When Kareena’s stylist for the film got in touch with me I was surprised as I didn’t think Kareena was an Anupama person. I felt her style was more body-con than flowy.”

But the film’s mood board wanted the leading lady in layers of flowing fabric. “I was told that since Kareena’s role was going to surprise the audience, her look too should surprise everyone.”
The end result is a hit as Anupama says, “Kareena looks ravishing and owns this look.” Anupama also reveals that the actor was easy-going, fun to work with and willing to experiment.

If you too want to replicate this look, Anupama tells you how, “It’s non-kitsch and very styled. Only one element (the skirt) is fluid. Otherwise there is a defined waist and the back is straight too.”

When you are thinking what shirt to wear, think sexy, advises Anupama. “Think ’70s knotted shirts, a bit of a peek-a-boo style or even ones which come in slightly sheer fabrics.” The shirts have to be fitted and feminine. Don’t do baggy, especially near the bust. “Also try and show a bit of skin like your collar bones,” she adds.

Coming to the skirt, it has to be flowy but invest in pieces that are bright and colourful.
