CCTV ‘catches’ cop stealing

Police constable was found stealing three and half sovereigns of jewels

Coimbatore : A police constable has been caught red-handed for stealing three and half sovereigns of jewels, recovered from thieves and kept at Gomangalam police station in Pollachi. The footages of CCTV camera installed at the police station clearly showed the young constable, S.Pandi, stashing away the booty. The constable has been arrested on charges of theft and placed under suspension.
 
On the night of July 27, the constable who was on night duty at the Gomangalam station, consumed liquor inside the station hall, after removing his police uniform and changing over to a casual 'lungi'. 
The two CCTVs installed in the station hall showed the shocking spectacle of the constable switching off the lights and picking the keys to the locker from the writer's drawer. The footage then showed him staggering to the storeroom and stealing the gold jewels kept locked in the cupboard.  
 
The next day, the theft came to light when the station writer found that a three and half sovereigns of gold jewel recovered from a thief had gone missing. When the police scrutinized CCTV footages. 
They were shocked to see the constable stealing the jewels. After the writer of the station raised question about the missing gold jewels.  
 
The Gomangalam police station has a total of three CCTV cameras  one installed at the entrance and the other two cameras inside the hall. The constable has been arrested on charges of theft under Section 380 of the IPC and lodged in Coimbatore central prison on Thursday.The Coimbatore district SP, M Sudhakar, has placed the constable under suspension.
