Telangana: Drought chances may go up to 70 per cent

Telangana already has one of the highest rainfall deficits in the country

Hyderabad: Chances of drought this year will increase tremendously if the deficit in rainfall continues over the next few weeks. Experts said that there is a 50 per cent chance of drought this year in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, as observed on Wednesday. Telangana already has one of the highest rainfall deficits in the country.

Meteorologists held a meeting with disaster management officials of the revenue department of both states on Wednesday regarding the drought situation.

Dr K. Seetha Ram, scientist , Meteorological Centre, Hyderabad, said, “Chances of drought will increase to about 60 to 70 per cent over the next few weeks if there is insufficient rainfall.”

IMD Hyderabad director-in-charge Dr Y.K. Reddy said that rainfall will decrease substantially over the next  week after the current depression subsides.
