New Delhi: He has dominated the 66kg freestyle category at the world level. And now, wrestler Sushil Kumar hopes to achieve something similar in the 74kg event as well. Sushil, who won the 66kg gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, will compete in the new weight category for the first time at the Glasgow Games, after the world federation (Fila) decided to re-organise the weight categories.

The changes, that came into effect earlier this year, saw the 60kg and 66kg freestyle categories being replaced by the newly-introduced 65kg event. However, in this edition of the Commonwealth Games, the 60kg category has been replaced the 61kg event and while the 65kg division has been introduced instead of 66kg.Fila’s decision came as a shock for Indian grapplers Sushil and Yogeshwar Dutt, both of whom used to compete in these categories.

As a result, Sushil moved to the 74kg category while Dutt embraced the 65kg grid (previously 60kg). In Glasgow, Bajrang will compete in the 61kg category. “I have made extensive changes to my training schedule to compete in the new weight category. Now, I do more power training with new techniques,” Sushil told this paper on Sunday.“I want to repeat my 2010 performance in Glasgow. I am training very hard to get gold. With the effort I have put in, hopefully I can get good results.”

In Delhi, the Indian wrestlers reaped a rich haul of 19 medals including 10 gold, five silver and four bronze. Sushil is confident that they will be able to put up a commanding performance in 2014 as well.
