Shine Tom Chacko makes his debut on stage with the play Azeezinte Varthamaanam to be performed this Sunday in Kochi.

Kochi: Shine Tom Chacko’s unnerving ordeal to prove his identity as an Indian started with his attempt to get a passport for an overseas job. In an attempt to get a ration card as identity proof for his passport, he was  termed an immigrant and lost his citizenship. Well, maybe this didn’t happen to Shine, but it certainly happened to Azeez, the character he plays in the upcoming play Azeezinte Varthamaanam.

Directed by Vijayakumar Prabhakaran, Azeezinte Varthamaanam is a theatrical adaptation of N.S. Madhavan’s short story Mumbai that narrates the story of a young Muslim Keralite who ends up being termed an immigrant. “Vijayakumar brought up the idea for this drama during the shoot of Annayum Rasoolum. Later, we found some time to work on it after the schedules of Masala Republic and Bangalore Days. We’ve been practising for the play since the beginning of May. Parvathi Menon, Shabu K.Madhavan, Pradeep Sukumaran, Harikrishnan and Razal are also part of the cast,” says Shine.

Vijayakumar believes N.S. Madhavan’s story is still relevant in our contemporary scenario. “Even after so many years, the story is still relevant and contemporary. It can happen to anybody. This is why I chose that story. Shine seemed to suit the character's description and he is an actor who has a lot of energy. That always helps while acting on stage. The drama is also dependent on the technology. The story takes place in Mumbai. So to establish that scene, sound is a very important medium. S. Radhakrishnan, who was the sound engineer for Annayum Rasoolum, handles the sound for the play, while Ashok Nelson, the guitarist of Thaikkudam Bridge is in charge of  the music. All the technicians who are a part of the play are experts in  their field,” he says.

The drama marks Shine’s debut on stage. “I have acted in some drama competitions in my school days, but this is the first time I’m performing professionally. It’s more or less like movies, except that in movies you act in front of your crew in an open set, while here you act in front of an audience. Of course, retakes, breaks in between shots, editing and camera tricks are not available options here, but then these things are taken into account when you adapt a story to theatre format and technical assistance helps as well,” adds Shine. Azeezinte Varthamaanam  will be staged at Fine Arts Hall, Kochi on June 29 at 6.45pm.
