FIFA World Cup 2014: Costa Rica register 3-1 upset victory over Uruguay

Forteleza : Costa Rica created a big upset in group D as they defeated Uruguay 3-1 in the opening match. This was Costa Rica's first ever victory over Uruguay. Cavani gave Uruguay lead in the first half by converting penalty. Costa Rica though came back strong in the second half and scored the equalising goal through Joel Campbell but qick goal from Duarte and Marcus Urena strike just six minute form the end ensured Costa Rica's victory  over South American rival. TYo make matters worse for Uruguay their regular full back Maxi Pereira was sent off just before the final whistle. This was an historic Victory for Costa Rica  and the biggest upset of this years World Cup so far

 

  • 15min: Godin's goal was disallowed as he was in offside posititon  
  • 16 min:  the second real opportunity to take the lead  Uruguay Forlan's free kick takes a deflection  and falls in the path of Cavani  but he mistimes his volley and the effort goes well wide. Uruguay supporters feel let down. Uruguay has fare share of possesion and inspite of getting behind Costa Rica Defence they failed to create much chance 

  • 24th min: Cavani scores from the penalty spot. The  Paris Saint-Germain striker places the ball into the bottom corner beating Costa Rican keeper Navas went the right way
  • 25th min: Campell goes close as his 25 yard shot sails just wide of Uruguay keeper Muslera's goal
  • 31st minute: Once agin Costa Rica getting close to an equaliser Giancarlo Gonzalez pokes the ball  towards goal after controlling with his chest . The ball takes a slight deflection and hits the side netting

  • 40min: Uruguay still lead by a  solitary goal scored by Edinson Cavani  through penalty. Costa Rica are still trying to create chances and have come close only once but still havent really tested Muslera in Uruguay goal . Meanwhile Forlan tries to score the goal with curling effort but fails to get proper connection behind the shot.

  • 43rd min: Bolanos whips teh ball from the resulted corner but the ball  just goes beyond the diving Giancarlo Gonzalez at the back post and on teh other end Forlan comes closer to score the second goal for the team . His  effort taking defelection off Costa Rican defender, it seemed that ball was going into the goal but goalkeepr Navas tips off the ball over the goal post  

  • The first half comes to an end Uruguay leads at half time thanks to canvani goal, Forlan coming close to scoring just before half time but Navas denying him with superb save . Costa Rica enjoyed major share of possession but failed to create much chance. The second half is expected to be cracker and Ciosta Rica will be looking to make a strong come back . Stay tuned for the second  half of the match
  • 50th min : Lugano booked for challenge concedes free kick
  • 51st min : Muslera makes brilliant save of Durate's header another chance goes beginning for Costa Rica
  • 54th min: Campbell equlises for Costa Rica with a stunning left foot strike which left keeper with no chance
  • 57th min: Duarte gives the Costa Rica the lead after heading the ball into goal off Bolanos free kick
  • 64th min: Campbell goes close with another effort as his shot bended towards top left corner misses  the target bya whisker. Costa Rica have suddenly taken the control of the match and  they are causing lot of  problems for  the South American side
  • 69th min: Cavani goes close as his header was punched away by Costa Rican keeper Navas who has been brilliant under the bar 
  • 81th min : Martin Caceres receives yellow card for his challenge 
  • 84th min : Urena scores the third goal for Costa Rica after being on the  field for  just 90 seconds. Joel Campbell providing the assist
  • 88th min: Costa Rica substitution Bolenos replaced by Michael Barrantes Rojas  
  • 90+4 min: Maxi Pereira sent off for rough challenge on Joel Campbell
