Centre plans to scrap Aadhaar

New Delhi: The differences between the core ideology of the BJP-NDA and that of the Congress-UPA are apparent in the plan afoot by the government to scrap UPA’s pet UID project.

Man feel that the plan has been put up as the present government believes in “exclusion” of non-citizens whereas the latter’s aim is to include all residents and provide them identity numbers that would enable them to benefit from government programmes and schemes.

The intent of the NDA government to take such a move was visible first when Prime Minister Modi decided to discontinue the previous government’s Cabinet committee on the Unique Identification Authority of India.

Sources in the government maintained that the end purpose of spending humungous amounts of money on generating Unique ID number should not be limited to linking it to welfare programmes.

There was already a dispute between the UIDAI, under the aegis of the plan panel, and the national population register, as their operations have been overlapping.

“As the UIDAI has no legal backing, a decision would soon be taken to scrap it and in its place the entire exercise would be handed over to the NPR, which will not only provide Unique ID number to a person but also establish bonafide citizenship," sources said.
