Whangarei,New ZealandPristine harbours, stunning walkways and a unique marina downtown; the northern island city of Whangarei looks like it came straight out of a postcard, but it’s no holiday here for Gaurav Gill. The first Indian to be crowned the Asia Pacific Rally Champion begins his title defence at the seasonopening Rally of Whangarei this weekend with Team MRF chasing a record hat trick. Powered by their Race Torque prepared Skoda Fabia Super 2000s, the Indian tyre major  who won five out of six rounds last season  look set to continue their domination.

The organisers have chalked out a new course with a great mix of twisting valley climbs, descents and fast  flowing plains. “It’s going to be challenging. There are a lot of gravel on the road. I have never seen like this in New Zealand. Since I am starting first, I will be sweeping them off and making it easier for the cars behind me. The winding course is more like mountain roads in India,” said Gill.
