Washington: NASA's Mars rover Curiosity spotted a mysterious heart-shaped craters on the surface of Mars, according to NASA.

According to the website, the unusual shape may have been caused by volcanic activity.

However, the space agency is so intrigued by the unusual shape is plans to train its telescopes on the 'broken heart' again to try and work out exactly how big it is.

"The feature indeed does look like a heart," researchers from NASA's HiRISE telescope, which took the image, said. “The feature rises above the surrounding terrain and we can see concentric ridges on its top," it added.

“Perhaps this feature is an ancient vent structure (an opening in the ground from which volcanic lava emerges) that has been more resistant to erosion than the surrounding area, so that it resembles 'inverted' terrains,” said NASA.

Last week, Curiosity came across a rock that looks very much like Australia and scientists have dubbed it “the Kimberley”.

The mystery of a ray of bright light coming from the surface of Mars, as appeared in a picture taken by its Curiosity rover and released by NASA recently, is still unexplained, there is another phenomenon to look into.
