Obama hails Afghan vote; 109 killed on election day

Militant attacks claimed 20 lives while security forces killed 89 Taliban members across Afghanistan

Washington: US President Barack Obama congratulated Afghanistan on its landmark presidential election, saying it was “critical” to securing the cou-ntry’s democratic prospects and continued international aid.

The ballots, “represent another important milestone in Afghans taking full responsibility for their country as the US and its allies draw down our forces,” Mr Obama said.

Meanwhile, militant attacks claimed 20 lives while security forces killed 89 Taliban members on Saturday across Afghanistan despite heavy security during the elections.
