New Delhi: Trinamul Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s move to go it alone in West Bengal is being opposed by a large section of her party MPs.

The MPs, who fear that the Left Front could benefit in a four-cornered electoral battle, want “Didi” to strike a pre-poll alliance with the Congress.

The state is set to witness a contest between the Congress, Trinamul Congress, Left Front and the BJP. The AAP, incidentally, is so far nowhere in Bengal’s electoral picture.

The electoral arithmetic being projected by party leaders shows that with the Congress eating into Trinamul’s voteshare, the Left might be able to sneak in following a division of the vote. In the 2009 Lok Sabha polls the TMC-SUCI-Congress combine had polled 45.67 per cent of the vote, while the Left, despite its rout, polled 43.3. per cent.
