Guwahati: BJP’s Prime Minister candidate Narendra Modi showered praises on former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s handling of the refugee crisis.
“What did Atal ji do for Hindus who after being subjected to persecution in Pakistan come to India? He made a comprehensive scheme for them and ensured there settlement in India without any extra burden in any of the states of the country.”
In an obvious attempt to counter Assam Chief Minister Mr Tarun Gogoi’s tirade against him, Mr Modi said, “When your CM comes to know that I am about to come here, he suffers sleepless nights.”
He also questioned Mr Gogoi’s absence from the state during the 2012 floods, “Mr Gogoi was in USA and went to Japan after that while state was reeling under the fury of flood.”
Mr Modi said, “What does Assam lack? This is a truly blessed state. But who has looted Assam?” Keeping his “chaiwallah” jibe alive, Mr Modi said, “When BJP comes to power we will develop facilities for tea traders and tea gardens.” He said, “Don’t trust Congress, they don’t have an agenda except ruining people’s lives.”
