Washington: The designer of Barbie doll has defended its controversial body shape and said that it was never designed to be "realistic".

Kim Culmone, VP of Design at Mattel, told FastCo Design that the exaggerated shape of Barbie was designed for girls to easily dress and undress the doll and also helped the company sew and shape common fabrics at such a small scale, the Verge reported.

She revealed that Mattel has an obligation to consistency and would prefer not to change its design much keeping in mind the doll's "heritage".

Culmone dismissed concerns that girls compare their body to the doll and said that young girls' perceptions are different than grown ups' perceptions.
